SUNY Oswego graduate and Utica's Lite 98.7 afternoon personality Peter Naughton was interviewed recently for an article in the university's student newspaper The Oswegonian about the difficulties of transitioning from college life out into the job market. Naughton, one of the few bright spots in the story, talks about catching an early break at market leader Lite 98.7.Here's a portion of the article titled 'Real world not all it's cracked up to be for many grads'...
Peter Naughton, a broadcasting graduate, managed to catch a break even before he graduated. While doing research for his honors thesis, Naughton interviewed several news directors. One of them told him about a part-time job opening at WUTR, Utica's TV station, where he had interned months earlier.
"When I did my Utica interviews the next day, I asked the news director there about the job, and a week later, it was mine. I went back and forth between Oswego and Utica every weekend during my final semester of college to work for WUTR," he said.
The job was supposed to become a full-time position after Naughton graduated, but spring budget cuts intervened.
But luck was again on Naughton's side. Lite 98.7, the radio station where he had interned during the summer, had a full-time job opening as an afternoon drive DJ. Naughton applied and got it.
"Rather than waiting for full-time at WUTR, which wasn't guaranteed, I decided on full-time at Lite 98.7," he said. While radio wasn't my first job preference coming out of school, it's been a very rewarding experience. It's also a lot less stressful than the daily grind of working in television news."
