If you check the resumes of the folks over at ESPN, you're apt to find a lot of them with references to Syracuse University. The Newhouse school has become somewhat of a feeder of broadcast talent to the Connecticut based sports channel.
Newhouse dean David Rubin points to play-by-play experience on WAER as one of the factors that aid graduates in successfully transitioning to the world of professional sports broadcasting.
