WBLH Reportedly Stunting

July 19, 2008 by CNYRadio.com

Nearly a month ago, we told you how WBLH/Black River (92.7FM) was LMA'ed from Randy Michaels' Radioactive, LLC to a company called Intrepid Broadcasting.  At that time, it was just a construction permit, but now we're hearing that the station seems to be stunting with some rather obscure music selections.

We got an e-mail from Craig Thayer of Texas, who tells us he was recently in the area visiting family.  He and his wife landed on WBLH by chance while driving around.  Craig writes:

The format was hilarious—an eclectic montage of old TV show theme songs, 30s big band, 60s, and ???  On the way back from Alex Bay we tuned in again to see what else WBLH had in store.  It turns out they were playing the same material, but this time we got to listen to the whole tape loop.  It was crazy enough to keep us listening through the whole loop.  What a hoot!  I wish there were more radio stations out there that would be bold enough to not be carbon copies of every other station on the dial.

We were sorry when we had to tell Craig this mix will more than likely be history before his next visit to New York, but we did promise we'd try to help him out.  He's wondering if anyone out there may have documented the list of songs WBLH is playing in that loop.  He says it's about an hour long.

Here at CNYRadio.com HQ, we're a bit too far out of range to get WBLH, so we're hoping for some help from those of you who can hear the station.  Complete or partial lists would be appreciated, by posting a comment below or by e-mailing us at cnyradio (at) cnyradio.com.  Try to include the date and time if you can... so if there's a song you don't recognize, maybe someone else can help fill in the blanks.  Let us know if you want to remain anonymous or if it's OK to thank you by name.

For our own curiosity, if anyone wants to send aircheck clips, we'd be interested in hearing them -- and possibly posting one or two.  We'd be most interested in the ID and any imaging liners, with 5-10 seconds of programming on either side.  While you're at it, the guys over at Toppy would probably appreciate an ID aircheck too.

  1. I've listened to this crazy 45 min loop for a couple of weekends while driving to/from Alex Bay. I was pretty curious about what WBLH was, so I did a search, found your site and got my answer. Here's the song list as I recall: (not exactly in order.)

    1) New York, New York- not original Frank Sinatra (Dean Martin??)
    2) Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple cover, sounds like Tom Jones?
    3) Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon - Neil Diamond(?)
    4) O Fortuna - by Carl Orff (hope that's right) It's a classical/opera thing that was used in a Capital One commercial with vikings
    5) Lil' Rascals - theme song
    6) Chick Habit - by April March
    7) Laurel and Hardy - theme song
    8) 3 Stooges - theme song
    9) "Having a Party" - don't know this artist
    10) Spanish Flea - Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass
    11) Benny Hill - theme
    12) Price Is Right - theme
    13) theme song used by Colin Cowherd's "In The Herd" talk show on ESPN radio. don't know what it is beyond that
    14) He-Man - theme song from 80's cartoon
    15) Right Place, Wrong Time - Jon Spencer
    16) Bob the Builder - theme
    17) Bananaphone - by Raffi
    18) something by the Muppets
    19) something that sounds like another old-time theme song, this one eludes me.

I think that's all of them...

  2. Thanks for the help... based on some other e-mail we've received, we think #18 might be "Mahna Mahna."

And #13, the theme from Colin Cowherd's show, is called "Battle Without Honor or Humanity" by Tomoyasu Hotei. (Not that we'd expect anyone to know that -- we had to look it up ourselves.)

Either way, your list is the first solid glimpse we've had of the happenings at WBLH. Thanks! Now that you've gotten the ball rolling, hopefully other listeners can fill in some of those blanks or confirm/correct the question-marked entries.

  3. Yeah, what an interesting loop. I'll miss it, but am working hard to download each track to have a memory of the eclectic mix. Here's my playlist, which differs a bit from Jen's above:

Spanish Flea - Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass
Whistle While You Work - Artie Shaw
Yakety Sax - Boots Randolph (Benny Hill Theme)
    Price Is Right Theme
Battle Without Honor Or Humanity - Tomoyasu Hotei
    He-Man Theme
Right Place, Wrong Time - Dr. John
    Bob the Builder Theme (remix)
    Bananaphone - Raffi
Girl, You’ll be a Woman Soon - Urge Overkill
O Fortuna - by Carl Orff
    Lil’ Rascals Theme
Chick Habit - by April March
    Laurel and Hardy Theme
    3 Stooges Theme
Having a Party - Sam Cooke
Smoke on the Water - Pat Boone
NY, NY - Frank Sinatra, no doubt
    Manamana - the Muppets
    Goodnight Irene - ?
