UTICA-ROME — He’s not just the co-host of SportsWatch on WIBX; Fred Miller is also the owner of a local newspaper and website that cover local sports. And in today’s edition of the Utica Observer-Dispatch, Miller discusses his love for his work, and how he became a “media jack-of-all-trades.”
In the article, Miller recalls his short stint as Operations Manager at WRUN/WKGW years ago, where he “learned the hard way that once you reach management in a market like this you don’t stay there long.” (We bet his current GM, Mary Jo Beach, might disagree — but we also realize her decade-plus run might be considered be an exception, rather than the rule.)
Miller also calls his time on SportsWatch “the best two hours of my day,” alongside co-host and PD Gene Conte. The two first worked together across town at the former “Sports Stars Network” of stations, when they were owned by Clear Channel. In fact, Miller tells the story of the unplanned start to his sports talk radio career, sitting alongside Conte one day in Cooperstown.
