Syracuse Press Club and RTDNA Murrow Award Winners

April 12, 2010 by CNYRadio.com

CENTRAL NEW YORK -- It's awards season for local media!  The Radio/Television Digital News Association recently announced its regional winners, and the Syracuse Press Club recently announced its full slate of award winners, recognizing excellence in journalism during 2009.

Syracuse Press Club

The SPC recently released a full list of award winners on its website.  However, the list does not say who won first place, second place, and so on.  Rankings will be announced at the SPC's annual awards/scholarship dinner on May 15th.

Osweg0-based NPR affiliate WRVO is the clear leader, winning awards in six of the seven news-related categories.  Among the highlights are the "Investigative" category, where Jasmyn Belcher submitted both entries to receive awards.

Syracuse-based NPR affiliate WAER is second, with a total of four news awards, including being in the running for first place in the "Public Affairs Program" category for Veterans, We're Listening by Brad Horn, Chris Bolt and Ryan Delaney.  On the sports side, WAER is the leader, with three awards, including a clean sweep of the "Sports Show" category for Countdown to Kickoff and Twitter and Sports.

Clear Channel's Newsradio 570 WSYR is the only commercial station on the winners list, with three awards.  Former anchor Alex Silverman is up for best news feature, reporter Ellen Abbott is up for best miniseries and Silverman joins Tiffany Latino, Jim Beebe, Nikolai Busko and Jay Fishman for Best Regularly-Scheduled Local Newscast.  They're up against former WSYR anchor Jason Smith and his current colleagues Jasmyn Belcher and Ryan Morden for their work at WRVO.

RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Regional Awards

The following local winners from RTDNA's "Region 11" (New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania) are now in the running for the same awards on the national level.  National award winners will be announced in June, with an awards dinner in New York City to follow in October.

Within CNYRadio.com's coverage area, North Country Public Radio, flagshipped at WSLU in Canton, was the only winner.  The station won two awards: one in the "Audio Continuing Coverage" category for A Year of Hard Choices, and the other in the "Audio Investigative Reporting" category for Seaway Valley and Hackett's: A Special Report.  You can listen to both pieces (and all the other winning entries) on the RTDNA website.

While we normally leave TV-related news to our colleagues at CNY Television News, they seem to be dormant lately, so we'll take a moment to recognize winners on the TV side for the regional Murrows.  One of your editor's former employers, Syracuse ABC affiliate NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) wins the regional award for Overall Excellence among small market TV stations, along with best website.  Across town, the former News 10 Now (recently renamed "YNN") wins for best feature reporting.
