NewsChannel 9 Expanding Local News

August 30, 2010 by CNYRadio.com

SYRACUSE -- It's a busy two weeks for ABC affiliate NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV). Right after 12 days of extensive coverage from the New York State Fair, it's the MDA Labor Day Telethon, followed the very next day by the addition of two more newscasts.

Starting on Tuesday, the station jumps on a trend that's been seen mostly in major markets so far, as The Morning News expands to a 4:30am start time.  According to the station's website, Dan Cummings will anchor the extra half-hour with Chris Brandolino on weather.  Co-anchor Christie Casciano will join in at 5:00.

And near the end of the day, NewsChannel 9 at 10:00 will debut Tuesday on digital subchannel 9.2, also available on Time Warner Cable channel 890, or Verizon FiOS channel 470. The 15-minute newscast will go live at 10, then repeated on tape on the quarter-hour until 11:00.  James Gaddis, formerly of WBNG-TV in Binghamton, will be anchoring.

Brown Takes SU Job

In other news from channel 9's Bridge Street studios, reporter Kim Brown is changing careers.  After roughly six years in the newsroom, Brown is taking a job with her alma mater, Syracuse University.  The Syracuse Press Club reports she'll be the new Alumni Program Coordinator at SU's Career Services office.

Now that CNYTVNews.com has folded, we've taken over that domain, but for the time being, we're not really "staffed" to go hunting for TV-related stories like we do for radio stories.  If there's something happening at your station, please let us know by emailing cnyradio@cnyradio.com.  All requests for anonymity are always honored.  Or if you'd prefer, use the Contact Form, where your name and email address are optional.
