SYRACUSE — Judy Kelly will soon be on the beach… but in her case, that’s good news! The GM of Leatherstocking Media Group’s six stations is packing her bags and heading south, to take a new job in Florida. Her last day at Leatherstocking’s Baldwinsville studios will be a week from today.
Kelly started working at Buckley Radio’s three-station cluster 17½ years ago, as Local Sales Manager for WSEN. Working her way up the ladder, Kelly was promoted to GSM and then VP, before being named General Manager just over six years ago.
Prior to working in Syracuse, Kelly was a sales rep for Utica’s WOUR. She says that’s where she met her future husband, Bob Wickwire, a fellow sales rep. They started dating after she moved to Syracuse, and eventually tied the knot, so Kelly says, “I have a lot to thank radio for!”
She tells CNYRadio.com that she and her husband “have long dreamed about moving south to get away from the snow and cold.” So when the opportunity came along from CBS Radio’s Sunny 104.3 in West Palm Beach, “it just seemed the right thing to do.”
Even though she won’t miss the winters of Central New York, Kelly says her favorite aspect of her job has been “working with the great people I’ve met over the years; both co-workers and clients. I’ve formed many friendships that I hope will carry over and we’ll find ways to work together and stay in touch, even with me in Florida.”
For most of her tenure as GM, Kelly oversaw three stations, but she’ll be leaving as the GM of a total of six stations in two markets. The portfolio grew to five stations when Buckley Radio sold the original three stations to Leatherstocking Media Group, keeping Kelly on as GM, and giving her the title for Leatherstocking’s Oneida-based WMCR AM and FM. Late in 2010, Leatherstocking acquired WUTI in Utica.
