ITHACA — Observant CNYRadio.com readers have noticed some changes at Saga’s Lite Rock 97.3 (WYXL) over the past couple of weeks: about a week after morning co-host Brian Stoll disappeared from the station, a new co-host is in place. Dave Ashton, a familiar name to local listeners, is back in the market — not only for mornings, but to program the station as well.
One reader wrote to tell us that Jen Mattison handled mornings solo last week, as all references to Stoll — on-air and on the WYXL website — had disappeared. Our anonymous tipster also reports Ashton appeared on the newly renamed “Dave and Jen in the Morning” show starting yesterday.
Today, Cayuga Radio Group ops manager Chris Allinger confirms the changes. He tells CNYRadio.com, “Dave is a great fit for Lite Rock. He knows the area, he knows AC and he knows how to make a great radio station. We couldn’t be happier.”
Our thanks to Allinger for also informing us of Ashton’s history in local radio. He was the PD at WIII, back in the mid 1990s, when the rock station was based in Cortland and owned by Citadel. But Ashton won’t have to worry about competing with his old station — both WIII and WYXL have been under the same roof, both corporately and literally — since Saga acquired WIII from Citadel in 2007.
We’re not sure if Stoll’s departure from WYXL was voluntary, but a Google search indicates he has moved south along Route 13 to co-host mornings at Elmira’s 94 Rock (WLVY), a CHR station owned by Pembrook Pines.
Try as we might, it’s difficult to keep tabs on the latest happening at every single radio station in the CNYRadio.com coverage area — especially when some stations are too far away for us to tune in.
