WCNY's Spartano Promoted to VP/Broadcasting

SYRACUSE -- Although he's already held the post for at least a month, WCNY formally announced this week that Peter Spartano has been promoted to Vice President of Broadcasting. The award-winning journalist, who most recently held the title of Executive Producer, now oversees all television, radio, programming and education services provided by WCNY.

Spartano was already being referred to by his new title in a WCNY press release issued last month, regarding changes on the WCNY-TV schedule including the cancellation of "WCNY Connected" and a formatting change for "Central Issues."

Spartano, who worked at channel 5 (WTVH) and channel 9 (WSYR-TV) prior to joining WCNY, also serves as Vice President of the Syracuse Press Club. He has taught courses at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Communications and he currently holds a seat on the advisory board of the Electronic Media department at Onondaga Community College.

SPARTANO NAMED WCNY’S VP FOR BROADCASTING

SYRACUSE, NY (March 8, 2011) – Award-winning journalist Peter Spartano has been named WCNY’s Vice President for Broadcasting, WCNY President and Chief Operating Officer Robert J. Daino announced recently.

Spartano, who had been WCNY’s Executive Producer, will now oversee the television, FM radio, programming and Education Services departments at WCNY. He has won several awards in documentary production, news production, writing and photo journalism.

“Peter will drive the daily operations and strategic vision of our broadcasting operations and ensure the content on our properties exceed the expectations of our viewers and listeners,’’ Daino said. “Peter’s expertise and knowledge of media make him an extremely valuable asset to WCNY.’’

Spartano was the Executive Producer of two 2010 WCNY documentaries that have been broadcast nationally on PBS: “Veterans and Their Families’’ and “Arctic Air.’’ His work has been recognized for excellence by the New York State Broadcasters Association, New York Emmy’s, the New York State Associated Press, the Syracuse Press Club, and the Telly Awards.

“This position allows me to continue to be part of an innovative team that produces quality programming that inspires, educates and entertains,’’ Spartano said. “One of my goals moving forward is to bring TV, radio and multimedia interactive services together as a way to connect more closely with the community.’’

Spartano is a former News Director at WTVH (Channel 5) and Executive Producer for News at WSYR-TV (Channel 9), both in Syracuse. He has also worked as an adjunct professor at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Spartano currently serves as Vice President and Board Member for the Syracuse Press Club, and sits on the Advisory Board for Onondaga Community College’s Electronic Media Department. Spartano lives with his family in Syracuse.
