SYRACUSE — Public broadcaster WCNY-TV/FM has named John S. Tonello as Vice President of Advancement, Communications and Content Delivery. Along with more than 20 years of experience in the communications field, Tonello brings experience in running a city — in December, he wrapped up a two-term run as the Mayor of Elmira.
A press release from WCNY explains Tonello “will be responsible for driving the strategy and execution of all WCNY advancement activities,” including overall fundraising activities, as well as the “Campaign for WCNY,” the specific effort to raise the last $3.5 million needed for construction of the public television and radio stations’ new Broadcast and Education Center on Syracuse’s Near West Side.
The announcement says Tonello will also “oversee WCNY’s brand image, wcny.org, on-air trafficking, messaging on all WCNY platforms, public relations and media services.”
Tonello is a 1987 graduate of Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. His 20 years of experience in the communications field includes time as a newspaper reporter and editor, an online manager, and work in public affairs, along with information technology, higher education and government.
While serving as the Mayor in Elmira, Tonello was director of communications for Cornell University’s Graduate School for several years, and in 2010, became the school’s director of information technology. Tonello lives in Baldwinsville.
