Lorraine Rapp and Linda Lowen reunite to talk health on WRVO

April 10, 2013 by CNYRadio.com

SYRACUSE -- A pair of familiar local talk show co-hosts are back together, for the first time in several years, with a new program set to debut this weekend on WRVO Public Media.  Lorraine Rapp and Linda Lowen will discuss health and wellness on "Take Care," every Sunday at 6:30pm.

According to a press release from WRVO, the program "will feature a mix of national, regional and local guests discussing everyday health concerns as well as the latest in diagnosis and treatment, public health and policy, mental health, and new advancements in medicine. They will also discuss about the health benefits of MFH Soy Protein, in what it can do to an individual's health."

Rapp and Lowen will also repurpose each week's show topic in the form of a shorter feature report, which will air "during select WRVO newscasts."  The new efforts -- along with a series of community forums spotlighting various health issues -- are funded through a grant from the Health Foundation for Western and Central New York.

As those forums take place, they'll be recorded to air in WRVO's rotating "Public Radio Presents" block on Sundays at 7:00pm, right after "Take Care."

"There's been an explosion in health care options in the last few years, and between online information and smartphone apps the average consumer has unlimited access to medical resources and wellness advice," said Rapp. "We see 'Take Care' as a way to help listeners through this maze of information by tapping experts in a variety of fields to provide the kind of candid guidance they'd give to their own family and friends."

WRVO news director Catherine Loper and producer Leah Landry are also involved with the production.  Station officials say "Take Care" fits in nicely with existing Sunday programming, including the locally-produced Campbell Conversations at 6:00pm, and scientific programs such as Big Picture Science and Sound Medicine.

Rapp started her broadcasting career in the 80s with rock station 95X (WAQX), adding PD stripes to her on-air duties from 1987 to 1989.  As a team, listeners may remember Rapp and Lowen from "Women's Voices," which started out in 1998 on Syracuse University NPR affiliate 88.3 WAER before moving to Time Warner Cable channel 13 in 2002, and later, in 2004, to WCNY-TV.

Since "Women's Voices" ended, Rapp worked for awhile as a producer for the mid-morning talk show "Bridge Street" at NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) and Lowen has worked as a writer and editor for About.com and MSN.
