WRVO wins only Regional Murrow Award in CNY

April 18, 2013 by CNYRadio.com

OSWEGO -- The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) announced the winners of its 2013 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards today.  This year, Oswego-based NPR affiliate WRVO was the only radio or television outlet in Central New York to win an award and move on to the national level of competition.

WRVO won in the "Use of Sound" category among other "Small Market Radio" stations in Region 11, which includes New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The award-winning story, by Randy Wenner, was titled "Locally developed GE prototype goes to Smithsonian."

The Murrows are considered to be among the most prestigious awards in journalism.  By winning a regional award, Wenner's story is now under consideration for a national Murrow award.  Although the RTDNA divides the competition into 14 geographic regions, Wenner's story has a 1-in-12 chance of winning a national Murrow because there are two regions for which no winner was named in the category.

We'll have to wait until later this year to find out whether Wenner will be bringing home a national Murrow for WRVO.  The 2013 Edward R. Murrow Awards ceremony is scheduled for Monday, October 14 in New York City.
