POTW: Syracuse Television legends gather for autographs (2013)

May 3, 2013 by CNYRadio.com

SYRACUSE -- It's not very often that you get the chance to see more than a dozen past and present top names from Syracuse television -- from different stations -- all together, in the same place. But that happened last weekend, when this group gathered to sign copies of Syracuse Television, the book chronicling the history of its namesake.

Sitting, from left: Liz Ayers, Phil Markert, Mike Price.
Standing, front row, from left: Dennis Calkins (aka Baron Daemon's sidekick, "Very Hairy"), Ron Lombard, Bill Carey, Tim Fox, Lou Gulino.
Standing, back row, from left: Doug Logan, J. Daniel Pluff, Ron Curtis Jr., Christie Casciano Burns, Rod Wood.

The group was on-hand to sign copies of Syracuse Television, the 128-page book which details the birth and evolution of the Syracuse television market, starting with the 1948 launch of what would eventually become WTVH. The book was released in late March and has already sold enough copies to warrant a second printing. WSYR-TV anchor Carrie Lazarus was also on hand, but had to leave before the photo was taken.

Burns, Fox and Gulino co-authored the book. Photographer Tim Kane snapped the shot, and Burns posted this photo on her Facebook page for all to see. (Click that link to see a larger version of the above photo, and a few other angles from the event.)

Last weekend's signing took place at Barnes & Noble, which is one of many local retailers selling the photo-filled book. It's also available through online retailers like amazon.com or you can order directly from the publisher at www.arcadiapublishing.com or (888) 313-2665.

Got Pictures?

Your editor wishes he could have witnessed this gathering himself, but a prior engagement meant missing out on the photo and the autographs... but we're glad Tim Kane took some photos and Christie Casciano shared them on Facebook. We're always looking for great photos related to television or radio in Central New York... if you have one to share, send it to cnyradio@cnyradio.com. A new Picture of the Week appears on the site every Friday at 7:00am... and it's thanks to reader-submitted photos that we can make that promise.
