Roger Springfield sentence: 5 years probation

June 6, 2013 by CNYRadio.com

SYRACUSE -- Former WSTM-TV sports director Roger Springfield will be on probation for five years, after admitting he secretly videotaped student athletes in locker rooms while working as media director for Syracuse University Athletics. This morning's court sentence allows Springfield to avoid having to register as a sex offender.

On WSTM-TV's website, cnycentral.com, Maren Guse reports Springfield pleaded guilty to one of four counts of unlawful surveillance.

Earlier this year, prosecutors accused Springfield of surreptitiously videotaping students on the men's soccer, lacrosse and football teams in their locker room at the Carrier Dome on multiple occasions, dating back to 2002.

Because Springfield's duties as media director included shooting and editing video of games, practices and interviews for the university's website, Springfield had routine access to the locker room, and students may not have suspected the camera was rolling at times when it shouldn't have been.

Springfield was terminated by SU last December, after Syracuse Police and the Onondaga County District Attorney's office announced Springfield was "under investigation." But authorities did not reveal the exact nature of the investigation until January.

Prior to joining Syracuse University in 2003, Springfield -- whose legal name is Roger Cahak -- worked at Channel 3 for eleven years. He earned one Emmy Award for “Outstanding Sports Special,” and seven Emmy nominations. He also holds 23 Telly awards, one College Sports Media Award, and two College Sports Media Award nominations.
