WTVH transmitter out "for several days"

January 1, 2014 by CNYRadio.com

SYRACUSE -- While many of us see a new year as a clean slate, a New Year's Eve transmitter outage at CBS5 (WTVH) will continue "for several days" into 2014, the station announced today.  Until the main 5.1 transmitter returns to service, over-the-air viewers can catch CBS programming on WSTM digital subchannel 3.3.

CNY Central announced the outage on its website last night.  A new story posted today said the transmitter will be "off the air for several days."

As has been the case in the past, the outage only affects viewers who rely on WTVH's over-the-air signal.  WTVH provides a direct feed to Time Warner, Verizon and other cable/fiber services, so customers of these services are not affected.

Although WTVH and WSTM are technically owned by two different companies, WSTM owner Sinclair Broadcast Group operates WTVH through a shared services agreement with WTVH owner Granite Broadcasting.  It has been commonplace during previous WTVH transmitter outages for CBS programming to temporarily displace the automated local news/weather feed on WSTM channel 3.3.

Previous WTVH Outages

Although WTVH’s transmitter was infamous for a string of outages a couple of years ago, this is the first outage we've reported on in nearly a year.  Here's the coverage from some previous outages:
