Channel 9 hires new weekend meteorologist

SYRACUSE — The Storm Team at NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) will return to “full strength” by the end of the month.  Kate Thornton will be moving up I-81 from Binghamton to handle the ABC affiliate’s weekend newscasts and to fill-in on other newscasts as needed.

Our thanks to channel 9 news director Rob Cartwright for sharing the news with CNYTVNews.com.  Although Thornton three and a half years experience doing weekend weather at Binghamton Fox affiliate WICZ, Cartwright said Thorton “is anxious to learn more from Dave [Longley], Dave [Eichorn] and Jim [Teske]” about forecasting the weather for Central New York.

He says Thorton will begin two weeks from today, on January 22.  She’ll be filling the vacancy left by Julia Weiden, who left last month for a new job in Mississippi.  The position involves covering all of channel 9′s weekend newscasts, morning and night.

According to the resume linked through her Twitter profile, Thornton also has experience on the news side of things — to fill out the rest of her full-time schedule at WICZ, she served as a “one-man-band” field reporter three days during the week.

Bounce TV gets cable coverage

While we’re talking about NewsChannel 9, a quick update on the new BounceTV network that’s now airing over the air on channel 9.3: during this morning’s edition of Bridge Street [video], it was mentioned that the channel is now being carried on New Visions Cable channel 26.  Tim Fox said it will be available “soon” on Verizon FiOS, but no mention was made about Time Warner Cable.
