NEW YORK — Arbitron will pay over $500,000 and change the way it recruits survey respondents, to settle lawsuits concerning the use of the Portable People Meter in New York and New Jersey.

New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has informed Arbitron his office intends to sue the ratings company over plans to deploy the Portable People Meter (PPM) in New York City over alleged “unlawful and deceptive acts and practices.”

Less than a week after New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo raised questions about the methodology behind Arbitron’s Personal People Meters, it looks like he’s got company from New Jersey.

The office of New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is reportedly opening an investigation into the methodology behind Arbitron’s Portable People Meter (PPM) system. The probe will focus on whether the PPM puts minority-oriented stations at a disadvantage. (Updated 12:30pm with Arbitron response.)

It looks like Arbitron has chosen to remain tight-lipped about the ratings for the Watertown (market rank #281) and Ithaca-Cortland (#285) markets. According to radio-info.com’s ratings page, Arbitron has withheld numbers for both markets for the Spring 2008 survey.

Sorry we’re a few days late on this one — it’s the first time we’ve had really good internet access during our summer vacation, so we just noticed Arbitron has released the P12+ ratings for the Syracuse and Utica-Rome markets. It appears Clear Channel’s WBBS (B104.7) and Regent’s Lite 98.7 (WLZW) are the clear winners in their respective markets.

There’s one tiny thing that’s made being an observer of the CNY Radio scene a little frustrating for quite some time. Arbitron hasn’t released ratings data to the public in a few years now, in any of the four markets covered by CNYRadio.com. Many of you also indicated such frustration, so we went looking for answers.

The latest Syracuse monthly trend numbers look good for Citadel Communications stations, particularly 93Q (WNTQ). With a .9 ratings point increase over last month’s trends, the CHR station moved past 570 WSYR into second place in 12+ numbers.
