SAN FRANCISCO — Several local radio stations may need to look for new programming, after the widely-syndicated Dr. Dean Edell announced yesterday that he’s retiring from his medical advice show at the end of the year. The show has local affiliates in Syracuse, Utica-Rome and Ithaca/Cortland, among others.

Your editor is just back from a week of much-needed vacation. While we had a few advance stories “in the can” to auto-publish during the week off, there are several items we missed while away. This afternoon, we finally catch-up on some of those events we missed while we were out. 
LOS ANGELES — Just a week after an incident where she said “the n-word” live on-the-air several times in a row, Dr. Laura has announced she’s going to end her radio show when her current contract ends this December. Formerly heard on prominent news/talkers in Central New York’s two largest markets, Dr. Laura’s show is now only heard on one station on the fringe of our coverage area. 
ITHACA — The FCC has ordered Saga Communications to pay $10,000 in fines, in regards to what the Commission has ruled to be “willful violations” the company made regarding transmitter W240CB. The ruling came after complaints were filed by the Geneva-based Finger Lakes Media Group, who argued W240CB’s signal at 95.9FM had interfered with programming from Z95.5 (WFIZ). 
GENEVA — Three stations in the Finger Lakes Radio Group have been fined $10,000 each — for being honest about their public files lacking information about certain issues which aired on the stations prior to 2001. GENEVA — Finger Lakes Radio Group’s AC 98.5 WNYR has an immediate opening for a morning show co-host. For more details, read the station’s official job posting. 
Updated 9/9/09 - GENEVA — Brendan Cooper is headed to a new job in Rochester, creating an “immediate” opening for a News Director at Finger Lakes News Radio. The three-station network includes WGVA 1240 in Geneva, along with WAUB 1590 AM and 98.1 FM in Auburn. AUBURN — Finger Lakes News Radio has a part-time opening for a play-by-play announcer to cover various Auburn High School sports, starting this fall. |
