UTICA/ROME — We had first reported this on May 25, but it was quickly retracted by those involved. Now, the news is “official” — Gene Conte and Fred Miller are moving from Townsquare Media’s WIBX to Galaxy Communications’ trio of ESPN Radio stations. Conte, who has been serving as PD for WIBX, will become PD of the ESPN trimulcast. ESPN Radio also picks up Dave Peroni for play-by-play duties.
UTICA/ROME — There’s cause for celebration at Galaxy Communications: the company was named “Business of the Year” by the Mohawk Valley Chamber of Commerce. The Syracuse-based broadcaster, which owns six stations in the Utica-Rome market, was named the winner among businesses with 50 or fewer employees.
RALEIGH, NC — National trades are reporting a promotion for former K-Rock (WKRL/WKRH/WKLL) personality JJ Herr. Since 2007, he’s been working middays at country station WQDR, and now adds Assistant PD duties at the Curtis Media Group-owned station.
SYRACUSE — The new afternoon show Disturbing the Peace was supposed to debut yesterday on The New ESPN Radio (WTLA/WSGO/W249BC/W259AX). But listeners who tuned in during the advertised 2-6pm timeslot heard ESPN network programming instead. We checked in with Galaxy Communications management to see what happened.
UTICA-ROME — Galaxy Communications has announced former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts and his current band, Great Southern, will headline the schedule at Classic Rock 96.9 WOUR’s “Party in the Park” concert on July 21. Admission is free and a number of local bands are also expected to perform.
SYRACUSE — Galaxy Communications says acclaimed blues musician Kenny Wayne Shepherd will headline next month’s “Blues, Brews and BBQ” hosted by classic rocker TK99/TK105 (WTKV/WTKW). Organizers have also announced the rest of the lineup, along with ticketing information.
SYRACUSE — Starting in March, there will be a new home for ESPN Radio. Galaxy Communications is not only taking over the network affiliation from Citadel’s WNSS 1260 — the company will be offering ESPN’s programming on the FM band, and it will bring the Spanish-language programming of ESPN Deportes into the market.

SYRACUSE — Starting next week, fans attending Syracuse University basketball games will hear the voice of Galaxy Communications VP/Programming Mimi Griswold over the public address system. The announcement makes her the first woman to become a permanent PA announcer in the Carrier Dome’s 30-year history.
NEW YORK CITY — Our congratulations to longtime Syracuse TV and radio broadcaster Rick Gary — one of several personalities inducted to the New York State Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame last night, during a ceremony at The Paley Center for Media.
SYRACUSE — Nationwide industry magazine Radio Ink says Mimi Griswold is one of the top 10 programmers in radio. That’s according to the magazine’s October 19th edition.
