SYRACUSE — Viewers have been asking, and NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) today explained the noted recent absence of longtime anchor Rod Wood. He’s recovering after “a minor surgical procedure,” according to a statement released by the station this afternoon.
Updated 12/6 with WSYR press release – SYRACUSE — Nearly seven months after Jim Tortora vacated the News Director’s office at NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV), there’s now word of a new leader for the ABC affiliate’s news department. Reliable sources tell CNYTVNews.com that the new boss will be Rob Cartwright, who comes to Syracuse after three years as Assistant ND at The CW affiliate in Dallas.
Updated 12/1 – SYRACUSE — While it’s not uncommon to see “Syracuse University” mentioned by national networks like ESPN, those mentions had usually been for game highlights and other routine sports coverage typically afforded Division I schools. That all changed nearly two weeks ago, when ESPN and other networks converged on Syracuse to cover developments in the Bernie Fine case. And it’s been a two-way street, as local broadcasters have been honoring requests to assist stations in other parts of the country.

SYRACUSE — If she’s lucky, NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) reporter Racquel Asa won’t have to do any more live shots in mounds of lake effect snow. TVSpy.com says Asa is one of three new hires at ABC affiliate WFTV in Orlando, Florida. She’s expected to report for duty in the Sunshine State “early next month.”
SYRACUSE — “You’d never know it by looking at the picture,” says WSYR-TV Assistant News Director Roger Mirabito, but a scary-looking scene involving the ABC affiliate’s satellite truck late last week — was all caused by a simple mechanical problem that cost less than ten bucks to fix.
SYRACUSE — A friendly wager between two local broadcasters resulted in some public humilation for NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) reporter Keith Kobland. Kobland, who also provides morning news updates for Classic Hits Sunny 102 (WZUN), lost a bet against Sunny morning show co-host Melissa Midgley.
SYRACUSE — Roughly three months after taking the helm of the WIBX 950 newsroom in Utica, Jules Thompson is trading in his News Director business cards for the chance to work closer to home. He’s headed back to Syracuse, to become the nightside assignment editor for ABC affiliate NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV).
SYRACUSE — ESPN Radio’s Upon Further Review hasn’t even officially debuted yet, and the show already has another new co-host. Former SU and NBA basketball star Derrick Coleman will join the show during basketball season.
SYRACUSE — The rumors have been swirling ever since NewsChannel 9′s Steve Infanti joined the cast of ESPN Radio’s weekday afternoon talk show back in August… and now those rumors are confirmed. Starting Monday, Upon Further Review will be simulcast on television. Fans will be able to listen on the radio, or watch on digital channel 9.2.
