SYRACUSE — It’s a blast from the past in this latest installment of “Picture of the Week.” NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) anchor and Syracuse broadcast historian Rod Wood recently sent over several photos from his extensive collection. This week, we look back at a WTVH publicity photo from the late 1980s or early 90s. Can you name everyone in this photo?

SYRACUSE — Hey, I don’t care what you think about Amy, that’s no way to refer to her! Just kidding, of course — even if you’re not a fan of Jersey Shore, chances are pretty good you know “The Situation” is the nickname of Mike Sorrentino, one of the stars of the hit MTV series. He appeared at any event hosted by 93Q (WNTQ) at Turning Stone Resort and Casino’s Lava night club. 
BUFFALO — It’s two franchises for the price of one today: this is a “Picture of the Week” and a “Where Are They Now” together in the same post. This week’s photo comes to us from Grant deBruin, formerly of Syracuse’s WSYR-TV and Utica’s WKTV. 
SYRACUSE — A handful of former Clear Channel Syracuse employees (mostly from WSYR radio) gathered for an impromptu “reunion” on New Year’s Eve. We’ll borrow a phrase commonly used by one of the attendees to say the gathering took place at “an undisclosed location” within Onondaga County. 
SYRACUSE — It’s pretty routine to see sports announcers like “Voice of the Orange” Matt Park along the sidelines during TV coverage of Syracuse University men’s basketball games. But if you were paying attention just after SU finished its 75-49 trampling of Seton Hall on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome, you might have spotted another local radio personality who hammed it up for the TV camera. 
UTICA/ROME — It’s a joint effort between radio and TV stations in the Mohawk Valley, and organizers say this year’s “Stuff the Bus” toy drive is on pace to surpass last year’s total of 8,000+ toys. The entire thing wraps up with two events taking place tomorrow — in New Hartford and in Utica. 
SYRACUSE — When it comes to local television news, the Carrier Dome is usually the domain of sports reporters and sports anchors. But ever since the Bernie Fine story broke about two weeks ago, stations have been changing their usual staffing arrangements to cover the developments. 
SYRACUSE — For our latest picture of the week, our congratulations to Bob Brown, the midday host at Classic Hits 92.1 WSEN-FM. Bob and his bride Cathy were among the countless couples worldwide to tie the knot on the memorable date of 11/11/11. 
SYRACUSE — Although quite a few people spotted the Google Maps Street View car over the summer (including Utica’s WLZW, Syracuse’s NewsChannel 9 and the Syracuse Post-Standard), it seems most people catch it after it has passed by. But morning host “Big Mike” Fiss of Sunny 102 (WZUN) and Mix 102.5 (WUMX) was lucky enough to spot the car before it arrived — with enough time to run outside and pose for the camera. 
OSWEGO — With so many choices on the radio dial, a clear, memorable logo is an important part of any station’s branding strategy. And anytime a station “updates” its logo, it has to update lots of other things — from letterhead and vehicles, to billboards, coffee mugs and … mic flags. This week, a look at how WRVO’s mic flag has evolved over the past 40+ years. |
