UPDATED 11/21 at 6:00pm — We’re back from a little more than a week “off the grid” (a.k.a. vacation). Here’s a quick recap — bullet points first, details to follow — on some of the stories that happened while your editor was away.
UTICA/ROME — Less than two weeks after crosstown competitor Mix 102.5 (WUMX) went all-Christmas, the market’s heritage AC station, Lite 98.7 (WLZW) has made the switch. Today’s start date is notably earlier than years past: in 2009 and 2010, WLZW waited until the day after Thanksgiving to roll out its holiday playlist. 
ALBANY — Not many people have the honor of saying they were the General Manager of two prominent radio stations before turning 30, especially in a top-75 market. But Robert Ausfeld did just that, and after nearly four decades in radio, he’s set to retire at month’s end. Although Ausfeld was based in Albany, he oversaw one cluster of Utica-Rome stations for part of his career.
UTICA/ROME — If you’ve got on-air experience and want to “back” into the biz on a part-time basis, this one could be for you. Lite 98.7 (WLZW) is looking to expand its part-time roster. Here’s the official announcement from PD Eric Meier: 
UTICA/ROME — It’s one of the many ways local broadcast radio gives back to the community. The 11th annual Children’s Miracle Network radiothon on Lite 98.7 (WLZW) raised $29,000 over a two-day period this week. Every single dollar raised will directly benefit pediatric and maternity services at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare in Utica. ALBANY — Even though Rich Lawrence and Kim Dunne are no longer part of the weekend on-air lineup for Utica’s Lite 98.7 (WLZW), the duo haven’t completely walked away from the microphone. Earlier this week, they debuted their brand new podcast, The Kim & Rich Show.
UTICA/ROME — In less than two hours, “Flashback Saturday Night” host Rich Lawrence will be signing off Lite 98.7 (WLZW) for the last time. Lawrence says he’s had a blast over the past five years he had been on the station’s part-time roster, but he says it’s time to move on. 
HERKIMER — Thanks to reader submissions, we’re firing up the Picture of the Week time machine for at least the next three weeks in a row! This week, we’re headed 50 years back in time — and about 50 miles east from CNYRadio.com HQ for a look inside the studios of WALY in Herkimer. Any guesses on who these two guys are? 
UTICA/ROME — You may have read in the national trades by now, about yet another round of cuts by Clear Channel. This time around, the cuts mainly targeted production staffers. One of those pink-slipped this week was Randy Spicer, who went to work for CC in Atlanta after more than a dozen years at Utica’s Lite 98.7 (WLZW).
