CENTRAL NEW YORK — All this week we’re celebrating the 10th anniversary of CNYRadio.com with a series of special reports. Yesterday, several folks who’ve been in local radio for 10+ years explained why they feel consolidation was “the” biggest story from the past decade. Despite the negative side of consolidation, most radio pros are optimistic for what’s ahead. Today, we share their predictions for the next ten years.
UTICA/ROME — Kiss-FM (WSKS/WSKU) has received the “Shining Star Award” from the School and Business Alliance (SABA) at Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES. The award recognizes the station for a variety of activities that help educate high-school age students about careers in broadcasting.
UTICA-ROME — Even though Arbitron didn’t release its Spring 2010 ratings estimates to the general public (the market’s actually been embargoed since the Fall 2008 book), Arbitron’s Fair Use policy says media can report on certain ratings data — as long as the data is provided by subscribers. That’s just what happened, so for the first time in over a year, we have a snapshot of the radio battle in the Mohawk Valley.
UTICA-ROME — From the better late than never file, there are still three more shows left in the Summer Concert Series hosted by Roser Communications’ KISS-FM duo (WSKS/WSKU). They’re bringing in national recording acts every other week through the rest of this month and next. Updated 2:30pm.
UTICA-ROME — Stew Schantz, who once served as Operations Manager of Clear Channel’s former Utica-Rome cluster, has passed away at the age of 53. He most recently was working as OM and afternoon driver at WUPE in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Anonymous sources say Schantz died Friday morning, of complications following a heart attack Thursday night. Updated 6/14 with official obituary/arrangements.
UTICA/ROME — A major restaurant chain known for its great ice cream recently hosted “Free Ice Cream Day” at nearly all of its locations last weekend. In many markets, radio stations ran live remotes to draw more attention to the event, and it’s been awhile since we’ve had a Picture of the Week from Utica… where Kiss-FM (WSKS/WSKU) was promoting the giveaway.
UTICA-ROME — Roser Communications’ Kiss-FM (WSKS/WSKU) recently invited local high schools to submit videotaped entries for the chance to let the simulcast CHR stations “invade” their prom. The station will be joined by the national recording artists Lovesick Radio, who recently posed for a photo with the station crew.
CENTRAL NEW YORK — Plenty of local stations helped their communities celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day by taking part in local parades and other events. It wouldn’t be fair to just show one station, so we’ve got a few different ones sharing the honors in this edition of Picture of the Week.

UTICA-ROME — Recent concerns about criminal activity at night clubs in the Utica area have promoted some discussion among the DJs who play music at those clubs. Kiss-FM (WSKS/WSKU)’s S-Dot — who also works as a club DJ — was among a handful interviewed for a newspaper article published today.
UTICA-ROME — It’s a move we don’t see often, especially in the current economic climate: a syndicated show being replaced by a local personality. That actually happened this week on the two Kiss-FM stations (WSKS/WSKU) owned by Roser Communications Network.
