Watertown Legend George Neher Dies

August 25, 2009 by CNYRadio.com

WATERTOWN -- Longtime North Country broadcaster George Neher died today at the age of 65.  Neher, who worked for decades at WWNY radio and WTNY, was found dead by his wife inside their home at about 1:20 this afternoon.

WWNY-TV broke the story, quoting police who said Neher had recently been under a doctor's care.

The Watertown Daily Times reported Neher had last been on-air about three weeks ago, and was recently released from Samaritan Medical Center following an illness.  The newspaper said an autopsy will not be conducted.

WWNY's Tuesday night news broadcast included a summary of Neher's long career in Watertown broadcasting; starting with WWNY radio from 1964 to 1980 before moving to WWNY-TV, where he served as a director, anchor and reporter.

Prior to working in Watertown, according to the newspaper, Neher first worked at WPDM in Potsdam, having originally arrived in the area to attend St. Lawrence University.  WTNY says it will "pay tribute to our friend and colleague Wednesday morning."

Obviously, arrangements have not yet been set.  We'll update this story with that information when it becomes available.
