SYRACUSE -- The Tipp Hill-based KISS-FM is looking for new ways to get on the air with a low-power FM transmitter in Syracuse. The station is also exploring the possibilities of simulcasting on transmitters in several other nearby communities.
Owner/PD Brad Stone tells CNYRadio.com he's "assembling a committee to oversee the operations of our station." He says KISS-FM's parent company -- NexGen Digital Media (no relation to the radio automation software of a similar name) -- is also studying the feasibility of signing on transmitters in Auburn, Oswego and Central Square.
"No papers have been filed yet," says Stone, "but we are looking to bring in a team to help us move things forward." Membership on the committee is mostly on an invitation-only basis, but Stone says "we welcome people who feel they are qualified to contact us."
The station can be heard online at www.kissfmcny.com.
On a side note, the KISS-FM website and the live audio stream will be down from June 7-9 for scheduled maintenance. The website debunks "rumors that our station will be shutting down," saying "we can assure you this is far from the truth." I am just curious as to whether or not radio station KISS-FM in Utica, that reaches into Syracuse quite well, will be in conflict with the above KISS FM or vice versa. Will two KISS FM's cause any confusion?
Adventure, that is a very good question. Thank you for your input. At the current time the KISS-FM station for Utica does not actually make it into most of the proposed areas of the expansion for our station. We have ran many tests with the station before deciding to move forward, and our test has discovered that the Utica KISS-FM station does not hit most of the city of Syracuse, Northern and Western Suburbs, and most of Oswego County. To provide a "neutral" viewpoint on this, the WSKS signal from Whitesboro is pretty spotty in Syracuse. You can pick it up through parts of the eastern suburbs and even some parts of the city, mostly on the eastern side.
But for the most part, in downtown and through the western portion of Syracuse, the WSKS signal on 97.9 is drowned out by a number of other signals including the WOLF translator on 98.3 and the same-channel signal of WPXY from Rochester.
Not to mention, Roser's Kiss stations don't really market themselves towards Syracuse listeners.... so while they may have some listeners in the Syracuse area who found WSKS by chance, I wouldn't expect much confusion. Most people in Syracuse are more familiar with 93Q, Hot 107.9 or Movin' 100.3.
