Jasmyn Belcher Leaving WRVO for Big Apple

July 1, 2010 by CNYRadio.com

OSWEGO -- After four years as an award-winning reporter/producer in the WRVO newsroom, Jasmyn Belcher is packing up and moving to New York City. She's accepted a position as an Associate Producer at StoryCorps, an oral history project that produces interviews heard nationwide on NPR's Morning Edition.

According to her bio on the WRVO website, the 2006 SUNY Oswego grad was hired full-time in January 2007, but had prior experience part-time at WRVO for a summer prior, along with various internships and even earlier experience heading up the news department at student-run campus station WNYO.

While serving the WRVO news department, Belcher's work earned numerous awards from the Associated Press and the Syracuse Press Club. Her stories have also been carried nationwide on NPR shows like All Things Considered and Weekend Edition.  In addition to her reporting duties, Belcher serves as co-host alongside Jason Smith for WRVO's Weekly Edition, which debuted just a few months ago.

From what she describes, it sounds as if Belcher's new job will be a comfortable fit.   She tells CNYRadio.com that two projects she helped to create for WRVO -- specifically, Stories to Tell and the Veterans Listening Project -- "were both modeled after StoryCorps, so it's really exciting to be joining them."

Belcher says, "I'm looking forward to this new adventure, but I'm really going to miss the WRVO family." She's thankful for the support she has received from listeners and colleagues since her departure was announced, noting, "I can't thank WRVO and the CNY community enough for the incredible opportunities I've had over the last four years."

Belcher's last day at WRVO is this coming Monday. We haven't heard back yet from Assistant GM for Content Fred Vigeant about the search for a replacement.  We presume a formal job opening will be posted shortly, but the station is already in the midst of filling two other positions:

  • General Manager John Krauss retired earlier this year, following an impressive 41-year run at WRVO.
  • Morning Edition producer Ryan Morden recently was promoted to a newly-created reporter position funded through a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, leading the station to find a replacement for Morden's original position.
