Syracuse, Utica TV Stations Cooperate for Funeral Coverage

June 14, 2011 by CNYRadio.com

UTICA -- Television news outlets from Syracuse and Utica set their competitive differences aside yesterday, pooling their resources to provide live coverage of the funeral services for Oneida County Sheriff's Deputy Kurt Wyman. Staffers, cameras, live trucks and other resources from WKTV, YNN, WSTM, WTVH and WSYR were combined as a single unit for yesterday's coverage.

Lou Gulino is assignment manager for CNY Central (WSTM/WTVH) and he's also President of the Syracuse Press Club. On the Press Club's website, Gulino gives readers a look inside the process of forming pool coverage.  He explains who provided what, how it all came together, and why pool coverage was considered to be the best solution, compared to having each station do its own thing.

Time Warner Cable's YNN and Utica NBC affiliate WKTV both carried the service live in its entirety. WSYR and CNY Central did not pre-empt regular programming on their primary channels, but offered live coverage via their digital subchannels and websites.  Syracuse stations also "dipped into the live pool feed heavily during their noon news broadcasts," Gulino wrote.
