NewsChannel 9 Posts News Director Opening

SYRACUSE -- Almost two weeks following the sudden resignation of longtime News Director Jim Tortora, ABC affiliate NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV) has officially posted an opening for a News Director on its website.  Among other requirements, the announcement requires candidates have at least five years of news management experience.

NewsChannel 9 WSYR, the Newport Television station in Syracuse, New York is seeking a dynamic News Director to lead our local news operation.  Serious candidates must have a proven track record of success of developing and coaching talent, consistent execution of fiercely competitive product, research-based strategic thinking and planning, high ethical standards and effective newsroom management.  Must have the ability to effectively deliver product on multi-media platform and make it relevant to the next generation of news viewers.  This is a unique opportunity to take an award winning product to the next level.  We recently launched High Definition news with a new control room, set and graphics; now we need someone who can pull it all together and produce compelling newscasts day after day.  Minimum five years news management experience required.

Last week, we reported that an anonymous source had forwarded a copy of a memo GM Theresa Underwood had emailed to the entire staff on May 9, announcing Tortora's resignation.  CNYTVNews.com had requested confirmation and comment from Underwood.  While our request went unanswered, she did confirm Tortora's exit to the Syracuse Post-Standard a day later.  For the newspaper, Underwood also confirmed that veteran Assignment Editor Roger Mirabito is currently serving as Interim News Director.
