Ryno, who has been doing mornings for Galaxy Communications sister station modern rock KRock (WKRL/WKRH), is pulling double duty as TK’s new night jock. He just made his debut on the classic rocker within the hour.
Updated 1/18 – SYRACUSE — Does the Syracuse area have more Boston Red Sox fans or more New York Mets fans? After carrying Sox baseball last season, ESPN Radio 97.7/100.1 (WTLA/WSGO) is now hedging its bets with Mets fans. The station announced on Friday that it’ll be Syracuse’s radio home for the New York Mets this coming season.
SYRACUSE — Dave Frisina, who was suddenly fired last week from TK99/105 (WTKW/WTKV) after eight years with the classic rocker, says he’s going to stay active in his efforts to promote the local music scene. “The only thing that’s changing is I’m not on the radio right now,” he tells the Syracuse NewTimes, in an article published today.
Updated 12/31 – SYRACUSE — Longtime local rock radio personality Dave Frisina was fired by Galaxy Communications after his airshifts today on Syracuse’s TK99/TK105 (WTKW/WTKV) and Utica’s 96.9 WOUR. After he broke the news on his own Twitter feed, local media outlets quickly picked up the story. Frisina started his radio career over 33 years ago at 95X (WAQX) and made the move to TK99 in 2003.
SYRACUSE — Years before the practice of radio stations “going all-Christmas” became a popular trend across the country, there was Big Mike’s Christmas Broadcast. Every year, Sunny 102′s Big Mike Fiss invites dozens of local musicians to perform holiday favorites live on the air. This year was particularly notable — it was the 30th year Fiss has staged his popular Christmas special.
SYRACUSE — Kudos to the crew at K-Rock (WKRL/WKRH) on being named “Modern Rock Station of the Year” by national trade publication FMQB. The award was based on votes cast by members of the radio and record industries. K-Rock, owned locally by Galaxy Communications, was up against other “secondary market” contenders, stations in markets ranked 51-100.

SYRACUSE — Although quite a few people spotted the Google Maps Street View car over the summer (including Utica’s WLZW, Syracuse’s NewsChannel 9 and the Syracuse Post-Standard), it seems most people catch it after it has passed by. But morning host “Big Mike” Fiss of Sunny 102 (WZUN) and Mix 102.5 (WUMX) was lucky enough to spot the car before it arrived — with enough time to run outside and pose for the camera.
UTICA/ROME — Less than two weeks after crosstown competitor Mix 102.5 (WUMX) went all-Christmas, the market’s heritage AC station, Lite 98.7 (WLZW) has made the switch. Today’s start date is notably earlier than years past: in 2009 and 2010, WLZW waited until the day after Thanksgiving to roll out its holiday playlist.
